Ally Capellino + Tate: Guerrilla Girls Edition

Since 2006 there has been a range by Ally Capellino at the Tate shops.

Initially conceived as a collection for aspiring artists the brown canvas range was known by a ubiquitous satchel style that seemed to be the right thing for so many people young and old. An urban myth developed that proposed that the satchel was based on one used by Constable. It wasn’t so.

In the time since then there has been a digital revolution meaning that a pencil, rubber and notebook are a bit old school. But we are also in the midst of a revolution to support minorities of any kind. To give opportunity to more talent that may not look or feel like what has gone before.

We jumped at the chance to be able to work with some of the archive of the Guerrilla Girls when Tate suggested it. Their work is on a mission. They target the art world and challenge the domination of the white male artist.

Ally Capellino + Tate: Guerrilla Girls you are seeing less than half the picture backpack

We chose the piece whose words proclaim, ‘you’re seeing less than half the picture’, and in some cases have wrapped the work around the bag so that you are literally seeing less than half of the image.

This set of 5 bags consists of a backpack in 2 colourways with the slogan and another without. There is also a tote and a crossbody. In keeping with the sentiment and aggressive stance of the collective the bold uppercase words are printed in white on the black colour way and in black on the beige and orange version.

Madefrom 100% recycled polyester the ripstop bags bear all the functionality and robust design that is already associated with Ally Capellino.
